ABOUT THE CITY

The town’s folklore tells that a group of hunters who ventured into the forest in search of lumber is where San Jose del Monte earned its name. They discovered the Saint Joseph statue along the route. San Jose Del Monte was the name given to the location to emphasize its ancestry (St. Joseph of the Mountain).

The first city in the Province of Bulacan is San Jose Del Monte, sometimes referred to as the “Balcony of the Metropolis.” SJDM’s municipality was established on March 2nd, 1752. The population, which didn’t exceed 200, belonged to the Libtong and Meycauayan family of farmers and stonemasons. They had a modest existence, raising fish, vegetables, fruits, root crops, and other natural items. As San Jose Del Monte was less advanced, weak, and lacking in peace and order under the American rule in 1901, Sta Maria, Bulacan was given political control over it. The town became an autonomous Municipality in 1918 during American rule, with Honorable Ciriaco Gallardo serving as the first Municipal Mayor.
