The city received the Most Sustainable and Livable City and District in the Philippines (MOSLIV AWARDS) from Sustainability Standards, Inc. in 2021 for successful implementation of development and green initiative projects upholding the criteria of livable communities.

Owners and workers of farm sites actively participates in the initiatives of the city to offer farming experience to their visitors. Among them are the Santillan Farm and Paradise Hills Farm which offers educational tours and fruit picking activities that draws tourists in the area.

Harmony of Faith and Labor: The Radiant Tapestry of the Obrero Festival

Obrero Festival serves as a significant occasion to acknowledge, esteem, and pay homage to diverse categories of workers, particularly those who tenaciously confront the difficulties posed by poverty.

Obrero Festival is a lively and meaningful event held in tribute and in honor of the patrons of Muzon: St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters and laborers; St. Isidro the Laborer, the patron saint of farmers; and St. Peter the Apostle, the patron saint of fishermen. The three patrons demonstrated that poverty is not a barrier in achieving greatness and showed that material possessions are not the sole key to happiness. Drawing inspiration from this, the Obrero Festival instills hope in ordinary workers, guiding them towards happiness and greatness despite life’s many challenges. Muzoeños believes that attending and actively participating in the nine-day mass will result in their prayers being answered for obtaining steady employment or securing a job.

Every February 13, it is marked as the starting day of the Obrero Festival in Barangay Muzon. During this period, devoted participants engage in their time-honored traditions, highlighted by the notable “Prosisyon.” Additionally, a significant aspect of the festival involves conducting nine days of “Misa” or religious masses, which provides a spiritual dimension to the celebration. The heart of the festival lies in its ability to unite and strengthen the ties among workers and the community at large. Through a series of well-crafted ceremonies and festivities, the bonds between workers are reinforced, cultivating a sense of camaraderie and solidarity. This collective spirit communicates a powerful message of hope, motivation, and gratitude for the invaluable contributions these workers make to society as a whole.

Community Involvement

Barangay Muzon in the City of San Jose del Monte stood as the largest community in terms of population, boasting 127,506 residents. During the Obrero Festival last 2022, an estimated attendance of 8,000 individuals participated in the event including the nearby barangays The Obrero Festival presented a wide array of captivating activities that spotlighted the talents and skills of the local community. Among these were a vibrant drum and lyre parade and the “Tawag ng Tanghalan sa Muzon” competition, featuring 20 participants. This contest provided a platform for youths from various schools to display their musical and artistic talents. During the second and third days of the festival, a novena mass was conducted by the parish priests of the Barangay. As the festival unfolded, the fourth day, February 16th, featured competitions like “Guhit Obrero,” a painting contest with 30 participants highlighting local artistic abilities. Another event, the “Ka-Lutong Barangay,” drew 50 participants and showcased the culinary talents of the local residents. On February 17th, the fifth day, the “Pasiklaban ng Galing” took center stage. This street dancing competition involved 20 groups, comprising a total of 1,000 dancers, contributing a dynamic and energetic element to the festivities. Continuing with the novena masses on the 6th and 7th days, the eighth novena mass was held on February 20th, accompanied by the recognition of outstanding workers who brought honor to Barangay Muzon, known as the ‘Huwarang Obrero’. February 21st marked the ninth of the novenario, celebrated as the ‘Binayagang Bayan’, and the awardees of the winners of the “Guhit Obrero” contest. On February 22nd, the 8th Obrero Festival & Muzon Barrio Fiesta 2022 took place, featuring activities such as Pag ikot ng Musiko, the Slow drag Competition, the Misa Pontifical, Misa Mayor, a motorcade, and captivating fireworks display that brought a colorful and successful close to the Obrero festival. These engaging events were made possible through the collaborative efforts of Barangay Muzon’s officials, the Culture and Arts Council, Sangguniang Kabataan (Sk) and the Parokya ng San Isidro Labrador. The sponsorship by Hermano Mayor Arthur Robes and Ate Cong Rida Robes demonstrated a collective commitment to honoring the community’s spirit and talents.

Spiritual Experience

For the devotees of the Obrero Festival, they firmly believe that their dedication to the festival plays a pivotal role in attaining stable employment. Their conviction stems from the idea that by actively participating in and showing reverence to the Obrero Festival, they are aligning themselves with the principles and values exemplified by the three patrons representing different occupations – carpenter, fisherman, and farmer – symbolizes the diversity of labor and professions; they are not figures of grandeur but rather ordinary individuals who have left a remarkable legacy. Demonstrating that greatness is attainable irrespective of one’s social background or job role. The festival participants see in the lives of these patrons a reflection of their own struggles and aspirations. The Obrero Festival acts as a platform to honor their endeavors and resilience, and through participation, the devotees express their connection to this legacy. By honoring these patrons, the devotees also endorse the idea that fulfillment and happiness extend beyond material possessions. The stories of San Jose, San Pedro, and San Isidro the significance of hard work, determination, and a sense of purpose. The festival reinforces the belief that overcoming challenges and striving for greatness are not solely tied to accumulating wealth, but also to contributing positively to one’s community and society.

Cultural Education

Prior to the Obrero Festival, the San Isidro Labrador Church organizes a seminar that specifically targets the youth, barangay officials, and choreographers. This seminar serves as an orientation, aiming to familiarize these individuals with the Obrero Festival and its profound significance. The purpose behind this effort is to impart a deep understanding of the festival’s importance, thereby ensuring that participants genuinely comprehend and appreciate the essence of the Obrero Festival. It is also recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). It connects the past, present, and future, protecting the community’s heritage. The festival’s events teach people about Muzon’s traditions, creating pride and unity. This acknowledgment drives support, guaranteeing the festival’s ongoing role in preserving and enhancing the culture.

Creativity

The Obrero Festival features a distinctive hymn titled “Oh Dios na Manggagawa,” with lyrics penned by Father Dennis Espejo and music composed by Mr. Arnel de Pano. This hymn holds a special place as both a prayer and a unifying song for the festival. It is performed prior to the commencement of the Obrero Festival and is further disseminated throughout the community of Barangay Muzons via their Barangay Patrol vehicle. Additionally, this hymn is sung during the nine days of Misa leading up to the festival, enhancing its significance as a spiritual and communal expression.“Colorful banderitas’ ‘ enhance the visual appeal, symbolizing unity and joy of the Obrero festival. Safety and Security

Before the Obrero Festival, they hold an orientation for the entire event and collaborate with the police for security. The local community plays a crucial role in ensuring safety during the festivities. The barangay tanod contribute by maintaining order and providing assistance when needed. Their dedication guarantees a smooth event. The Sangguniang Kabataan’s involvement brings energy to the festival’s success. They help with logistics, manage the crowd, and assist attendees, creating a lively atmosphere. The San Isidro Labrador Church officials uphold the festival’s spiritual and cultural importance, reminding everyone of its origins and values. Safety measures, like wearing masks, prioritize well-being and show the organizers’ commitment to safety. The festival’s success and safety come from teamwork among the (PNP), barangay tanods, Sangguniang Kabataan, and church officials. Their collaboration ensures an organized, secure, and respectful environment with strict safety measures.

The Obrero Festival has a wide impact, preserving culture, uniting the community, boosting the economy, attracting tourism, providing education, deepening spirituality, fostering talent, and instilling community pride not just in Muzon but also to the City of San Jose del Monte people.In its radiant glory, the Obrero Festival stands as a beacon of hope, an eternal reminder that within the hearts and hands of every laborer, there lies the potential for greatness. The Bright Tanglawan Festival of the City of San Jose del Monte

In the heart of the bustling City of San Jose del Monte, a dazzling spectacle unfolds each year, captivating the hearts of its residents and visitors alike. The Tanglawan Festival, a resplendent celebration every September 1 to 10 that marks the commemoration of St. Joseph The Worker – the city’s patron saint, and the anniversary of its Cityhood, is a radiant embodiment of the city’s rich heritage, unity, and the unwavering hope that guides its journey towards a promising future. The Tanglawan Festival is a duly recognized festival of the Department of Tourism Region III and became a national event in 2022 as President Rodrigo Roa Duterte approved and signed the Republic Act 11728 or the Tanglawan Act. The City of San Jose del Monte was honored and given the Aliw Awards Foundation Inc.’s Best Festival Practices and Performances Award in 2019 as a result of the ongoing success of the Tanglawan Festival and also got the award for Best Festival Catalyst/Organizer.

The very essence of the Tanglawan Festival is encapsulated in its name. Derived from the Tagalog term “tanglaw,” which translates to “light,” the festival’s core symbolism lies in its ability to illuminate the city’s history, culture, and aspirations. The festival’s roots intertwine with a captivating tale of discovery, as a lost lumberjack, guided by a divine light, stumbled upon the image of St. Joseph The Worker. In 2017, the festival made history with the World’s Largest Lantern Parade, featuring 14,173 participants carrying lanterns ingeniously crafted from recycled cans. This dazzling display not only illuminated the night sky but also emphasized the festival’s dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Another extraordinary feat occurred during the Tanglawan Festival through the creation of the World’s Most Number of Living Figures in a Nativity Scene. Over 2,101 San Joseños, adorned as shepherds, united to reenact the timeless Nativity story, exemplifying cultural heritage and community unity. This living Nativity Scene went beyond performance, embodying the town’s spirit and determination to achieve the extraordinary together.

Meanwhile, Flower Offerings to Mary honor her purity and devotion, fostering gratitude and seeking guidance. This treasured tradition, especially on Mama Mary’s birthday, enhances the festival’s spiritual and communal aspects, inviting all to join in its heartfelt embrace.

This activity also boasts the delicious cuisines of the City, especially the Valenciana ala San Jose now has a variety of local dishes inspired by it like Valenciana Pizza, Valenciana Pasta, Lugaw Valenciana, and Valenciana Shawarma.

The Tanglawan Making Competition warmly welcomes families and residents to join in the Tanglawan Festival. This special activity sparks creativity and brings people together. It highlights each person’s unique style and talent, from older generations passing down traditional methods to young ones inventing new ideas. This event beautifully reflects the connections between different ages, which is a key part of the Tanglawan Festival’s spirit. Total of 30 families created their unique Tanglawan or lanterns that shows their creativity and uniqueness as a San Joseño household. This unique endeavor not only ignites creativity but also cultivates a sense of community engagement, bridging generations and kindling the spirit of togetherness.

The Tanglawan Mega Job Fair was held on September 7, 2022 that addressed the urgent job-seeking needs of the city residents and the demand for workers in various sectors. The job fair aimed to connect job seekers with local companies, serving as a platform for employment opportunities. Organized with support from the city government, the event was open not only to San Joseños but also to anyone seeking work assistance across different industries. Mirroring the festival’s radiant lanterns, the job fair illuminated a path to progress. It showcased the festival’s commitment to positive change and practical solutions for community members. By linking job seekers and employers, the event embodied the festival’s transformative impact and underscored its role in elevating lives within the community. In all, 605 candidates registered and submitted applications for local businesses, while 134 applicants registered and submitted applications for businesses abroad. As an added data for the applicants, 127 individuals became “Hired on The Spot” (HOTS). The exhibition was successful thanks to the combined efforts of 37 partners, including domestic and international industries, and 8 government agencies.

Collaborating with 23 devoted camareros, who are the custodians of the saints, the exhibit showcased a grand total of 53 revered saints during the Josephian and Marian Exhibit. This awe-inspiring assembly captivated the people of San Jose, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of witnessing this remarkable display. Hundreds of devotees visited the 10-day exhibit and attended the daily novena, flower offering to Mama Mary and masses.

The Tanglawan Festival’s Art Exhibit on September 1 to 15, 2022 served as a dynamic canvas for the City’s expansion and introduction, driven by the city’s talented artists. Local creators bring their visions to life, adorning the festival with expressive art displays supported by various art organizations. This collaborative effort not only showcases the city’s cultural richness but also enhances its visibility.

As part of the City’s anti-drug campaign and promotion of mental health, San Jose Del Monte’s Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CSADAC) and City Tourism Office (CTO) organized a Chess Tournament on September 3, 2022. This engaging approach captured the interest of 250 participants, aligning with the Tanglawan Festival and celebrating the city’s 22nd Founding anniversary. The tournament was held at SM San Jose Del Monte symbolizing the community’s commitment to a drug-free and mentally healthy future.

Innovation and Creativity

Participants had the freedom to submit numerous entries, painting a diverse picture of the festival. For its inaugural edition, the Tanglawan Festival introduced the Tanglawan Festival Queen competition on September 4 and 8. This innovative event spotlighted local designers, showcasing their creative talents through festival costumes that radiated the beauty of San Joseños. Notably inclusive, the competition also engaged makeup artists and embraced creativeness from the LGBTQ+ community. This dynamic initiative not only celebrated artistry but also fostered unity and diversity, reflecting the festival’s commitment to elevating local talent and nurturing a sense of togetherness.

The Cosplay Competition on September 9, 2023 is a colorful celebration of creativity, imagination, and fandom. Enthusiastic participants bring beloved characters to life, captivating audiences with intricate costumes and captivating performances. This vibrant event is a testament to the fusion of pop culture and the festival’s spirit, creating a dynamic showcase that embraces both tradition and modernity. As cosplayers embody their favorite personas, they contribute to the festival’s vibrant mosaic, adding an exciting and contemporary layer to the tapestry of San Jose del Monte’s cultural heritage.

On September 6, 2022, the “DepEd Day Patimpalak sa Katutubong Sayaw”, played as an integral part of the Tanglawan Festival. Spearheaded by the Department of Education Division of San Jose del Monte, the event showcased teachers’ talents not just in teaching Filipino folk dances but staging it for thousands of audience in the City Sports Complex. As a tribute during the National Teachers’ Month, educators from the 10 Districts of DepEd SJDM participated, celebrating culture and education.

The performances of Arya Aryahan Street Dance Competition is anchored on the colorful history of the City. Started with the discovery of the first San Joseños, the Dumagats, to the reduccion of Meycauayan.

The Tanglawan Festival of 2022 unfolded as a tapestry of engaging events, meticulously woven to foster vibrant community engagement. With a keen focus on inclusivity, four festival hubs were created; Sampol Festival Hub, Starmall Festival Hub, Savano Festival Hub and Poblacion Festival Hub. This brought the festival closer to its audiences which led to their active engagement and participation in various festival events. Malls became vibrant canvases hosting various events, moreover, the festival ingeniously harnessed the diverse facilities strewn across the city, crafting an immersive and enriched experience. This convergence of spaces and energies bore testament to the festival’s commitment to knit the community together, painting an indelible picture of unity and celebration.

The fusion of local artists and art organizations acts as a magnetic force, drawing visitors to explore San Jose del Monte’s vibrant identity. Through this artistic lens, attendees forge a deeper connection with the city, appreciating its unique character. The Tanglawan Festival’s Art Exhibit thus becomes a living narrative, inviting everyone to partake in its evolving tale, illuminating the path to cultural discovery and unity.

Embracing a holistic approach, the festival garnered active participation from various hospitals, uniting them under a shared commitment to public welfare. Hospitals such as Ospital ng Lungsod, Grace Medical Center and Skyline Hospital, standing as pillars of health and care, extended their ambulatory services, ensuring that attendees could revel in the festivities with the reassurance of medical assistance close at hand.

A seamless partnership between our Public Order and Safety Office and the esteemed Philippine National Police was another testament to the festival’s dedication to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all. A Festival Security Management and Deployment Plan is in place formulated through the collaborations of various agencies and departments in the city. This synergistic alliance amplified the visibility of the security team, fostering a sense of ease and comfort among festival-goers. The collective vigilance and coordinated efforts of these dedicated individuals contributed to an atmosphere where the community could fully immerse themselves in the joy of the festival without concerns about their well-being.

Equally indispensable was the unwavering presence of the City Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office personnels, which offered around-the-clock service to safeguard the event. Their vigilance, readiness, and prompt response mechanisms stood as a reassuring shield, reassuring attendees that every precaution had been taken to ensure a smooth and secure festival experience.

The Tanglawan Festival’s multifaceted approach to safety and well-being underscored its commitment to creating an environment where attendees could truly thrive. By leveraging the expertise and dedication of hospitals, security forces, and disaster management teams, the festival exemplified its profound care for the community, fostering an inclusive and enriching space where people could revel in the festivities with peace of mind.

The Pineapple Processing Plant of the SAMAKA-MPC, although fully operational already this year, could not produce the product as planned, due to Operational and Management Problem, such as Certification from the Food and Drug Administration that the product passed the Food and Drug Administration Requirement in order to be fully sold for market consumption that the products are safe for Public Consumption. That is why, this year’s marketing was just focus on trade fairs Sponsored by the City and the Provincial Government of Bulacan. As of now the Management is working on the documents and other requirements of the Food and Drug Administration. The City Government of San Jose Del Monte, thru our energetic and cooperative Mayor is extending his Administrative Authority to help our Cooperative attain the Certificate of Registration in order to fully operationalize the Marketing of the Products.

In spite of this problem the Cooperative was able to help the farmer by acquiring 980 pcs of Pineapple with a cost raging from P 30 to P 50 per piece and was able to produce 600 liters of (800 Bottles at 75ml) Pineapple Wine; 240 glass jars of 250 g. of Jam; 240 glass jars of 250 g. Marmalade; 400 liters of vinegar and limited number of candies and tarts for trial tasting and planned to operationalize next year. We were also able to produce Papaya Pickles (Atchara).

The seasoned products late last year and early this year was destroyed by the previous Chairman and his cohorts amounting to 450 liters, then re-started producing the products by the month of April up to this present time.

There are seven families who directly benefited from the cooperative by purchasing their Pineapple Fruits and Ten workers and laborers directly involved in the Pineapple Products Production.

For the Youth holistic formation through deep art appreciation towards sustainable development of the nation. Anchored with the burning love and passion to serve the community by teaching values `through arts, The SINTA (Sarang/Love)or SINing TAnglawan which means “Brilliant Artistry” was established by its Founder, Executive and Artistic Director and Choreographer Mr. Roberto Peralta Ramirez Jr. with the unqualified support of the City Government of San Jose del Monte recognizing it as the official performing arts group of the City.

With its pioneering mission to unify the local artists for a common goal to preserve, produce, promulgate and promote its rich history, arts, culture and traditions, the SINTA is conducting an Annual Citywide Arts Workshop to train budding artists for their artistic experience and explorations concluding with a Grand Recital to realize their full potentials.

We are honored to welcome and entertain numerous guests of the City such as the;

Department of Interior and Local Government Seal of Good Local Governance Audit,
Benchmarking Activity of the Municipality of San Andres, Romblon and
Sunfull Peace Movement Foundation from South Korea.

Sharing the authentic San Joseῆo soul and artistry to the rest of the world by granting invitational performances from various private and public institutions such as;

Celebration of Philippine Independence of SM Malls, the largest mall in the Philippines,
the world-renowned Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City, Philippines and
the highly esteemed Summit of ASEAN and Russia hosted by the Philippine National Government.

When the pandemic came, more people started to notice their peanut butter, and they sold more because they learned how to sell it online. This helped their business grow. As the world grappled with the challenges brought about by the pandemic, Rowena and Garcia found a silver lining.
